Tuscarora beadwork artist Grant Jonathan will present the history of Tuscarora raised beadwork, drawing on oral histories, historic images, and examples of beadwork past and present and currently on exhibit. Learn how to distinguish Tuscarora, Seneca, and Mohawk beadwork designs, the process involved in making beadwork, and how these creations were sought after by American tourists from Montreal to Niagara Falls. Grant Jonathan is a contributing artist to the Each One Inspired: Indigenous Art Across the Homelands exhibit currently on view at the State Museum.

About the Presenter:
Grant Jonathan, Tuscarora, Bear Clan, is an award-winning raised beadwork artist, collector of historic Haudenosaunee beadwork, and consultant on Tuscarora and Haudenosaunee beadwork history. He is a bead and fabric entrepreneur and travels throughout the US and Europe to source materials for Haudenosaunee beadworkers. He is an attorney and currently serves as the Tribal Program Manager at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 2 office in New York City. His beadwork creations are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian Institution’s National Museum of the American Indian; the New York State Museum’s Contemporary Indigenous Art Collection; the Iroquois Museum in Howes Cave, NY; Colgate University’s Longyear Museum of Anthropology; the Heard Museum in Phoenix, AZ; and the Museum Volkenkunde in the Netherlands. He splits his time between Brooklyn and the Tuscarora Nation, Lewiston, NY.
