*The event has already taken place on this date: Sat, 04/30/2016
A quick, but comprehensive look at the most important concepts and strategies that students must know to be successful on the SAT

Please help us keep this calendar up to date! If this activity is sold out, canceled, or otherwise needs alteration, email mindy@kidsoutandabout.com so we can update it immediately. If you have a question about the activity itself, please contact the organization administrator listed below.

This class will be taught by one of our most requested tutors, Brett LaFave.

Here's Brett's approach:

I believe that test-taking uncertainty is the biggest factor leading to negative test-taking experiences for students and that a little bit of well-planned preparation can go a long way. This class will prepare students for the updated format of the new SAT exam and the test’s new scoring rubric. The 5-hour-long course will inform students of changes to test format and discuss strategy relative to the new SAT.

I will discuss the new Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section, which includes elements of the former critical reading and writing sections. I will share strategies dealing with common grammatical, stylistic and content-based question types and students will get a chance to practice various question types and to discuss those questions with me and with each other.

I will also give strategies for the new Math section, including a focus on the most common question types and on the skills most critical to success. The class will include a detailed discussion of difficult questions and will discuss problem-solving approaches to challenging questions that are accessible to all students.

I teach students to write effective essays (based upon the grammatical, stylistic and structural criteria examined by the College Board) within a time constraint.

I believe that the single most important factor in determining student test-taking success is confidence, and this class is designed to enhance it through skill-building, positivity and information.
