Ever wonder what to do with your fall decorations after Halloween? Don't put them out for the trash, instead give them a smash!
Last year's Pumpkin Smash was a true 'hit', with 1,900 pounds of pumpkins being smashed, whacked and chopped in preparation to be put into a compost heap. Kids and adults had a grand time diverting their pumpkins from the trash and landfill.
Due to Covid-19 guidelines, we're hosting a drop-off only event this year, so we're suggesting you have a home 'Smash' party - and bring us the 'remains' or bury them in your own compost heap!
what you'll need:
an outdoor area, some newspapers to cover the ground, your pumpkins and/or jack-o-lanterns, a smasher, hammer, maul or bat, an adult to supervise children - you'll need to take turns like a when you hit a pinata! something to scoop everything up (leaf hands or a shovel should work!) a paper lawn leaf bag to hold the paper and pumpkin chunks and guts, an entry on your calendar to drop them off betwen 11 and 2 on Satruday, Nov 7th

Walking on the road, I did see a sight
Pumpkins set out for the garbage gave quite a fright.
Now all you who are quite maven
Pumpkins in the landfill are quite craven

But there is a new life for these orange gourds
And it’s something that we all can afford
So, get out your hammer, your smasher or mallet
Don’t worry if you don’t have a pallet
Save those seeds to toast and to roast
Bring the pumpkin bits and chunks for our garden compost

From all the yards in Amsterdam east
To Bridge St where the Southside feast
Bring your pumpkins from your humble abodes
Our smasher isn’t charged with electrodes
We do have a target with spikes it is loaded
For pumpkins to be thrown and the throwers to be goaded
The targets will be placed more than 6 feet away
Sectioned off by your used bales of straw and hay

The folks from Market St/Romeyn Ave wanted in
Waiting for the collection at Veteran’s Park to begin
Northampton Rd and Van Dyke Ave, not to be left out
Stood ready to collect their pumpkins and give a shout
Pumpkins are welcome from City Center, the west and the east
Cause as they turn to compost, the worms will a-feast
The scene was rockin', all were digging the sounds
Of chopped up pumpkins covering the grounds

Out from the garden, a voice did ring
Seems they were troubled by just one thing
So, we’ve set up the garden for drop-off & dash
Due to Covid-19, we must wear a mask
After you’ve used your smasher, mallet or hammer
Head down to Veteran’s Park, don’t cause a traffic jammer
And do the mash, it's a monster smash

Now everything’s cool, bring your smash in a bag or a can
And our Pumpkin Smash will be hit of the land

When you get to Veteran’s Park, tell them Boris sent you
Scoop up the pumpkin, bag it up tight
Drop it off to Veteran’s Park, to make compost just right!
