CANCELLED - Pinkster Azalea: A story of a unique plant, local history, the Dutch community, and slavery.
*The event has already taken place on this date: Fri, 05/08/2026
Our native Pinkster azaleas and the word Pinkster hold a unique place in local and New York State history. During the 1700s and 1800s, the word "Pinkster" was associated with a weeklong Dutch celebration of Pentecost that eventually evolved into a significant holiday for enslaved people. Once a major East Coast festival, it is now nearly forgotten. The term "Pinkster azalea" refers to two distinct species of Rhododendron that are native to New York.
