From April 4-10, Capital District residents of all ages can enjoy over 20 free storytelling performances as part of the Ninth Annual Riverway Storytelling Festi

In the past eight years, over 11,000 people have come to Riverway. The festival, one of the over 200 storytelling festivals held each year in the US, takes place at locations in Albany and Rensselaer Counties. This year, twenty-seven separate events are planned, including more than twenty performances, workshops for librarians, educators and storytelling aficionados, free performances in area schools, as well as student performances including New York State Finalists for the National Youth Storytelling Showcase. A unique art form in our modern world, storytelling is a shared experience between the audience and the teller, combining the intensity of a one-person play with the intimacy of a one-on-one conversation.

What’s new this year:

  • William K. Sanford Town Library in Colonie hosts all eight Saturday events, from 9:30 in the morning to 10:00 at night.
  • Storytellers and authors Joe and Jesse Bruchac from Greenfield Center are featured tellers, sharing stories from their Abenaki ancestry.
  • Two-time Grammy-award winning spoken word artist Bill Harley is a featured teller, sharing stories and songs filled with wit and wisdom.
